Chosen by partisan ballot every four years, the county clerk is clerk of the circuit court and is charged with the care and custody of all records, books and papers pertaining to the court.

The clerk is responsible for filing and recording all civil, criminal and divorce proceedings under the court’s direction and with maintaining the vital records and documents essential to the Jackson County residents. The county clerk also administers oaths and prepares apportionment certificates for local governments.

In addition, the county clerk has specific responsibilities involving several county offices. He or she is clerk to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and prepares and maintains custody of all proceedings of minutes which are permanent records. The clerk is secretary of the Board of County Election Commission, chairman of the County Election Scheduling Committee, clerk of the Concealed Weapon Licensing Board, secretary of the County Retirement Board, secretary of the County Plat Board, and chief election officer and clerk of the County Board of Canvassers.
